Air Piston Creation

For this project, I utilized a mill and lathe to fabricate the components of an air piston before assembling it and placing it in series with six other air pistons to create a pneumatically driven motor.

Project Context

As part of my Design in Mechanical Engineering class at OSU, I machined a full functioning air piston from blocks of material. The parts were machined to a 0.001” tolerance on the bore along with most of the mating components.

Following the machining of the components, control code was written to allow it to fire in sequence alongside five other pistons built independently by my classmates to the same spec.

While the design itself was assigned rather than original, this project allowed me to gain further experience in precision machining across different machine types. It also required each independently builty piston to be able to perform reliably alongside the others.
